The first self-proclaimed graphic novels were published from 1976-1978.

The film adaptation released April 2005 was co-directed by Robert Rodriguez and Miller with 'special guest director' Quentin Tarantino.

Reference to propaganda- images of glory and power.

Extreme violence.
I think it is easier to accept such horror when presented in a static image as it appears less real and naturally drawings are some-what removed from reality.
Battle Royale
(April 2006)
Originally a novel by Koushun Takami, Battle Royale was then adapted into movie by Kinji Fukasaku. Following the popularity of the movie, Takami worked with artist Masayuki Taguchi to adapt it into a Manga.

Early comic books were primarily comedic- they illustrated comical shenanigans. But there has always been an adult nature to the world of comics, nit necessarily through violence or sexual nature, but in language and subject. The beauty of the comic book format is that images are universal and can be understood by all ages, even if certain layers of meaning may not be grasped by a younger reader.

Here is a trailer of the exhibition.

This was a fantastic exhibition, it really pushed me into doing things I would NEVER ordinarily do. ...Lets take the example of dressing in a gorilla suit and messing about with random objects...it was surprisingly liberating to be in the costume... I felt hidden inside the suit, thus lost my inhibitions and was able to behave in a child/animal-like manner in front of other people viewing the show.

I felt that the Bruce Nauman piece related directly to my ideas about feeling trapped and also a sense of escape. As you enter the narrow space you immediately feel confined and the further you walk the more trapped you feel, your focus resting on the light at the end, once you reach halfway this feeling is at it's strongest.

This experience is very sensual, I thought the use of elasticated fabric to create walls was an interesting idea their flexibility reduces the sense of restriction one might feel when in a walled space. As you move through the space you must gesture and feel your way, outside one might observe an arm or leg pushing at the walls as the person inside makes their way through. I am interested in creating this sort of experience, I want to submerge the viewer in my work.

Haunch of Venison

Loud Flash was an exhibition of Punk posters from the start of the punk revolution in 1977, incidentally this coincided with the Queen's Jubilee.

After compiling a 'checklist of punk' using the posters on show as sources I felt there was definitely something very 'un-punk' about the exhibition- each poster encased in a plastic wallet arranged in fairly neat rows in a crisp white space. I think the show would have had much more impact viewed in the dingey basement of an old pub or in a derelict factory... but it was interesting to see the rebellion smothered in this space.

I LOVE YOU

I picked up a nice addition for my bedroom too...

(1.5m or so in height... and quite heavy considering it's polystyrene!)

I carried the heart (like this bear) from the river to London Bridge station and took it on the train home to Hither Green.

It's amazing how simply seeing a love heart shape can trigger such a loving response from complete strangers.

I feel my experience today was quite relevant to my elective... A heart is a symbol or expression of love, so generates a positive reaction. I would have been given the same sort of attention had I been carrying a smiley face or thumbs up etc, where as a big red 'X' or a skull and cross bones conjures a completely different reactions- they carry more negative set of connotations... I am slowly reading through a book on semiotics for beginners, so I will try and analyse this further...

punk.

Prior to out visit to Haunch of Vension next week we have been asked to research an aspect of the Punk period.

..I am looking into B Movies.

The Girl Chewing Gum

At the end of the lesson we watched a video by John Smith called The Girl Chewing Gum.

There is a voice-over which at first appears to be that of a director shouting directions to his cast and crew. as the film progresses the actions of the people and movement of the camera begin to stray from those being shouted. Thus we slowly become aware that this footage has been taken and the spoken text added to it.
